Bring Back Our Buses

At the end of our Meeting held at Dawson mall, Mount Druitt on 28th November 2009, I sang a poem that I wrote (off tune and no music) to bring back our buses - I just wish I could have someone play this song at our next community group meeting next year!

It goes like this:-

Up the road I walked to get to the new bus Stop,
It is hot, windy and dusty to top it all up,
And there are many commuters waiting for the buses to come down,
As I see all their faces not happy and frown!

Chorus:
Bring back those buses taken away from us,
Ripped out of our suburbs causing harm and disturbance,
We're all unhappy of behalf of all communities,
As we only ask for one thing, 'BRING BACK OUR BUSES, TODAY AND TONIGHT!'

Walking with full bags: losing strength, pace by pace,
Up stretched the road I'll never reach home and rest,

I am walking so slow as I am so told,
I am a disabled person walking across unsafe double-laned roads,

I am a young schoolchild as I walk more long distance with my parents,
And if I get late to school because of those late buses,
I'm then told to have late detention or even time out,

I am an everyday worker travelling far and wide,
With these new buses I have to wake up earlier and walk further outside,

West Popondetta Road Is Being Left Out!

Time and time again, I bump into community members concerned that our group is only focusing on 755 going through Bulolo Drive. To be fair to the community members around West of Popondetta Road, our original petition included Popondetta Road (as a lot of our group members lived around Popondetta Road). The difference is Bulolo Drive has got a small shopping community which the NSW government via bus operators had cut off services that had previously linked communities together, leaving small business desperate and wondering why doesn't the government care? These local community shops could be left as a possable future ghost town.

Relating to West of Popondetta Road - there is quite a distance to walk to the nearest bus op - limited shopper hoppers at Bulolo Drive, Luxford Road or around the corner to Woodstock Avenue. From the governments point of view and bus operaters, cutting services from small streets or crooked streets and placing buses into straighter roads. Well Popondetta Road is a straight road (except when it stops at Luxford Road). Then most roads turn into other roads - these bureaucrats and politicians are not working towards communities being linked by infrastructer that makes life easy - not to take away and rip out from their community hearts. To me if a community has been using transport that has been provided for decades - who has the right to take it away from us? why take it away from us?

What the NSW Government didn't realise is that there are a lot of people affected with this negative decsionss from all different age groups, children, workers, shoppers that need to use our public transport regularly to and from Mount Druitt (major shopping centre) take an average increase of 5 minutes per trip to reach the nearest bus stop destination. Yes walking may be good for health but walking in the heat or rain carrying full of shopping bags or work bags can lessen the quality time we spend with our families at home. Families do need more time at home, to enjoy their time and life with all members!

The damage has been done - but the repair that is needed would ease the lifestyles of community members that has dramatically and emotionally affected. We only ask for one thing bring those buses taken away from us! Especially West of Popondetta Road.

NB: There is s Busways Service 745 route which does run past West of Popondetta Road but that gets nowhere to Mount Druitt - it is a Castle Hill to St Marys Service. Patronage is rather low on West according to Popondetta Road according to one well respected communjity member whom lives around West of Popondetta Road.

Year of Save Our Bus Services Mount Druitt 2010!

By this time of the year a lot of community members must be thinking that we are giving up on them. Things have slowed down a lot but then what we haven't achieved as yet will be achieved -I'm a positive person although things may look down. No body wanted this to happen to lose their services.

There is a lot of background work that is being done, with the limited quality Group members we have: contacting NSW Minister of Transport directly so that 22 members representatives of all our Mount Druitt and Surrounding Suburbs will be speaking, meeting and presenting the NSW with our Petitions. Also other group members are talking to local csommunity members keeping them updated with happenings and events. Group members are contacting other Honorable State members providing their concerns.

One of our members is trying for a delegation of group to meet the NSW Department Ministry for further discussions directly and one of of members - knows a family member whom sometimes sees the NSW State Premier and will provide some whispers on our behalf (no names mentioned)! Also there will be community filming in areas of Bidwill/Salvey/Blackett areas, Mount Druitt South and Marsden Park next month!

There has been mentioned of our group and its future events and progress at a Whalan Community Action Group Meeting - as this is one voice of the local community that these issues can also be raised that has affected the community!

So next year 2010 is going to be "THE YEAR OF SAVE OUR BUS SERVICES MOUNT DRUITT!" where we, representing community members will welcome a back down from the NSW Government to support deleted services to be re-introduced and retain current services, The win will be the community's hard work facing everyone in every day life.

The longer it takes, the more community members get comfortable or maybe not comfortable - same with NSW Members of Parliament!

Quicker To Go To Penrith By Train Then By Bus

Yes, believe or not NSW Government is proud to provide a bus service from Mount Druitt via Whalan, Tregear , Ropes Crossing, Werrington, Cambridge Park & Penrith Interchange. If you would like to go direct to either Penrith or Mount Druitt Stations average times according to Westbus Penrith timetables (Rout 780) of 50 minutes - according to some commuters that have used that service and told me, 'Over an hour - it is quicker by train!'

I don't understand how The NSW Ministry of Transport can organise bus services to areas that the majority of commuters wouldn't use - without community consultation. Yes there is consultation with Councillors within Councils/s, yet do they represent their communities and do they report to their communities? Everyone of them?

Not! They don't knock on every community household door and advise you - they expect you to know from other mediums - which you may not be aware of.Whilst there are review tribunals which may be made of a few representatives from local Councils - there should be a public forum for community members to provide their feedback whether it be negative or positive, proper advertising through local press and radio, letter box dropping with assistance via Local community group's newspapers. At the end of the day we can all have our say as long as the bureaucrats and members of all tiers of government do not turn a blind eye to the feedback provided. Whom pays for these forums although NSW government claim they will pay for them, members of the community at the end of the day pay for these type of forums through taxes, fares and other governmental charges that creep up on us!

A train trip to and from Penrith to Mount Druitt approx 15-20 minutes. This allows you to do 30 minute shopping by the time the bus service reaches its destination! Who is then in front of time?

I'm not saying there is no patronage on this Westbus 780 service as I'm sure it would cater for the community - but my feeling from speaking to a lot of community members around Mount Druitt is not many community members would need this service beyond St Marys!

NSW State Government Notified

In such a short time our Save Our Bus Services Group has achieved the recoginition of community members drastically affected by the delection of servcies from great communities around Mount Druitt - please find details that is obtaineable from the NSW Government hansard . Both sides of government are showing their support!

Mr R.C. WILLIAMS to move—

That this House:

(1) Notes that 60 to 70 residents attended a community meeting at Whalan Community Centre on Saturday 8 November 2009, who have had their bus services such as the 755,766 and 782cancelled.

(2) Commends the work by the ‘Save Our Buses’ organisation that arranged the meeting and haslobbied for the reinstatement of these vital bus services.

(3) Condemns the Government for cancelling the 755, 766 and 782 bus services in areas such asWhalan, Mt Druitt and St Marys.

(4) Calls on the Government to immediately reinstate these and other bus services across WesternSydney that have been cancelled, which are affecting the most vulnerable members of our society,such as the elderly, disabled people and school children.


LONDONDERRY ELECTORATE BUS SERVICES

Mr ALLAN SHEARAN (Londonderry) [12.07 p.m.]:

All members will be well aware of the impact of changes in our communities. People generally do not like change, especially if they feel they are losing a long-term advantage. Such is the case when changes are made to timetables. Over the last month we have seen in Londonderry the introduction of new timetable for our buses. However, there have been some difficulties. One of the problems with any changes is that those who draft the changes are not always fully aware of the consequences upon the community. They draft the changes on paper, but it is not until the changes are implemented that the full impact becomes apparent.Such was the case in relation to two areas in my electorate, the north St Marys area and the Whalan area. What was particularly disappointing, despite the best of intentions, is that it appears the 12-month consultation process was not as effective in certain areas as one would want. While I am advised that in Region One significant changes were made to more than 16 proposals because of community feedback, in some areas there was confusion about the process or simply notices of the proposed changes were misplaced. Notwithstanding,

I will be forever grateful for the prompt action taken by the Minister for Transport, the Hon. David Campbell, and his staff upon their being informed of some of the problems faced by my constituents.Coincidentally, the Minister had visited my electorate in the first week of October, which gave me the opportunity to personally discuss with him the main concerns in Londonderry. For example, residents who used to catch the Westbus 782 service had raised the issue that buses would no longer travel along local streets in North St Marys, making it more difficult for them to access St Marys shops and railway station. Leading the call was Ken Moriarty and his wife Lorna. They certainly left no question as to what they thought of the timetable and in a very short time were able to gather a petition illustrating the effect of the changes. In response, I was able to show the Minister the extra distances that residents, many of them elderly, would have to walk to gain access to the bus services. After meetings with Ken and Lorna, I was later able to announce that the Minister had directed Busways to reinstate a service along Kurrajong Road and Maple Road, St Marys.In relation to the bus services in Whalan, I was approached by Mr John Svoboda on behalf of Save Our Bus Services. Initially the group raised concerns about the discontinuance of buses along Bulolo Drive in Whalan. I raised this matter with the Minister, and I am happy to say that after explaining the impact on residents in the area the Minister directed Westbus to bring back services to Bulolo Drive. I feel it is important to acknowledge the work of the members of Save Our Bus Services and other residents.

In this regard Minister Campbell listened to the concerns raised by the local community, and responded quickly and appropriately.<14>Notwithstanding, a further community meeting was arranged by SOBS last Saturday morning when about 50 residents attended and expressed concerns about other impacts of the timetable. Both the member for Mount Druitt Mr Richard Amery and I attended. In respect to the Londonderry electorate one of the main concerns raised was the discontinuance of bus services along Gasmatta Crescent, Whalan. Over the past few weeks the issue of Gasmatta Crescent has become in my mind and that of my constituents in the area a very valid concern. The area is home to a large number of elderly residents who in many instances have resided in the area for more than 20 years.

A boast of the transport providers is that no person would be more than 400 metres from access to bus services. However, upon investigation it became very apparent that this was not the case in relation to residents who used to get their bus services in Gasmatta Crescent. I personally checked the distance from one of these residents and it was over 700 metres just to walk to the main road, that is Luxford Road, from where they now have to catch their bus. During the meeting, as one can imagine, there was a lot of emotion and passion about the difficulties they now face. For instance, Peter told me he now has to walk three-quarters of a mile to get his bus service which was easily accessible for the past 40 years since he moved to the area; Ninette asked why did the Department of Housing build units for the elderly, who now find they have to walk some distance to get their buses; Mal simply asked why; Helen stated that she now has no transport to get to the doctor for her monthly appointments; Bev mentioned that it is hard for her to walk to Luxford Road and to cross the busy four-lane road; and Mary summarised her overall concerns, as follows:
Many other elderly people like ourselves, who have had the convenience of the bus service in Gasmatta Crescent. Now because the service has been taken away we have to endure a very uncomfortable long walk, plus the very real danger of crossing Luxford Road to catch a bus. Gasmatta is a loop road turns off Luxford Road and rejoins Luxford. So why in the wild world would you take the service away? These were just a few of the comments made on the day and I gave an assurance to the meeting I would raise these matters in Parliament, hence my private member's statement today. I have also made personal approaches to the Minister for Transport asking him to give this matter his close consideration. People like Ken and Lorna Moriaty and John Svoboda and members of Save Our Bus Services do not normally get too upset about matters but when services are detrimentally affected which impact upon them and their neighbours they look for action. In this regard I want to place on record my appreciation for their thankless efforts. I also want to reiterate my appreciation to the Minister and his staff and trust that their deliberations on this remaining issue of Gassmatta Crescent is very carefully examined.

SOBS Mount Druitt And Surrounding Suburbs Petition


I have enclosed a copy of the petition that is going around Mount Druitt, this can be used by any community members and once it is ready, send an e-mail to us and we will organise it to be picked up or dropped off to onr of our group members, thus adding to our total that has been collected so far!

Struggling Times

Here I was on 11/10/09 knowing we would have formed Our Save Our Services Group in a few hours time, so I decided I needed to have some evidence or take some back to the meeting, some eveidence that would support time factors for people spending more time getting to new busses. Here is the personal survey I had done:

>Walked from Whalan Pedestrian crossing North on Bulolo Road meeting junction of Belmore Road 7 minutes 27 seconds retrurn trip on south of Bulolo Road 7 minutes and 10 seconds.

>Walked from Whalan pesdestrian crossing East along Bulolo Road, turned left heading north into Karangi Road and reach to the corner of Karangi Road and Woodstock Avenue, 5 minutes 40 secinds. Return trip 5 minutes and 25 seconds

>Walked from Whalan pedestrian crossing west along Bulolo Drive and then turned left int Banaro Avenue south into the corner of Banaro Avenue and Luxford Road, left into Luxford Road east reaqching bus top on top of Luxford and Gasmatta Road, 8 minutes and 8 seconds.
Return walk was 7 minutes and 13 seconds.

>Walked from Whalan Pedestrian Crossing West along Bulolo Drive turn right into lpathway heaing north and then turn right heading west all along the pathway until you reah the park before corner of Waikanda Crescent and Luxford Road, 12 minutes and 8 seconds. Return trip 11 minutes amd 10 seconds

For a person like me in my middle age this may be alright but once you get the averages and multiply by at least ten trips a week then the amount of time is multiplied to at least an hour a week. We are not adding in the amount of time waiting for the bus as well. All of this is quality life time - we can then see that if you are 20 years to thirty years older than myself this is just called struggkling time!

Maybe you could walk and time the distance from your home to your bus stop and provide us feedack as to where to and from and advise what age group your are under - if not an elderly person add double the time and see if you appreciate the bus service you have in our suburbs - feedback is appreciated. If over 400 metres you require a bus service - thum rule of NSW State Government! Good luck!

755 Replaced By 674 - Patronage



Well, since the press release from Allan Shearan, NSW Hon. Member for Lodonderry of the 'Shopper Hopper 674' patronage has increased even though, not all the community members know about this service (refer article on left).

Just last Tuesday fortnight, I was waiting for the 764 at 10.02am at the corner of Bulolo Road and Ellengowan Crescent, Whalan and one gentleman said to me - 'You won't get buses here anymore!'

I advised him that we are and he was surprised - and felt extremely happy. Later, a young teenager passed me overhearing our conversation and said the 'The NSW Government Should not have neglected this area' -he also asked about time tables - showed him that there has been a neglect for a time table to be placed on the bus stop by now!

Bus arrived and I couldn't get one time table from the bus driver - driver advised me that over 4,000 time tables were ordered and received were approx 800!

The day after, at the same bus stop approximately 9am there was a patronage of 9 commuters - next stop 1 more commuter. Community members knew who I was and said they just want their returned bus services. They can see how this would entirely benefit the community!

Save Our Bus Services - The Story so far!

You can blame me for starting up our group, when I walked to the corner of Bulolo Road and Ellengowan Crescent Bus Stop in Whalan and asked a lady what is the Whalan Community Action Group doing about saving our buses? I got an 'I don't know!' answer, 'But I used to be a member and can find out for you.' The bus services were going to be deleted by the following week.

I gave her my phone details, next thing I received a call from her within 2 days, advising me that one lady is drafting a petition up, one lady is member of the group waiting for my call, another is the Secretary and another is President of the Whalan Community Action Group.

The second lady said to me what have I done to stir up the first lady? I questioned myself! She said 'No, that's a good thing - we need community involvement!' - within days we had people placing signs on bus stops regarding a petition to retain 755 bus services on Bulolo Drive and West of Popondetta Road, Whalan. Next thing I know, our petition day was 10/10/09, outside of Whalan Shops. I met so many important local community people. Even one that was only interested to gain votes from myself and another man at the next Blacktown Council Election.

That threw me off! Then one person said we are doing the wrong thing as this should all go through the Labor party branches & that the Hon. Member for Londonderry has heard of us and was unable to make it that petitioning morning. The reception received from all other members was heart-warming - as we found a lot of other areas and suburbs were widely affected. What happened next, I was asked to be Chairperson for our new 'Save our Bus Services, Mount Druitt And Surrounding Suburbs'. Our group was formed the same day the new time tables commenced. With 9 new members, a new petition to cover all of Mount Druitt And Surrounding Suburbs, only because we realised the day before that we didn't cover other areas of Mount Druitt.

We decided to hold a Community Meeting at Whalan Community Centre 7/11/09 10-12 noon - my first big public chairing! All opportunities were provided to all community members: although I stuffed up the way the meeting was supposed to go and gained experiences also taking constructive criticism very nicely along the way. In preparation to the meeting, we were asked to invite Bus operators from Busways and Westbus as well and Members for Mount Druitt and Londonderry, we have had press releases in-between the both the St. Marys Star and Mount Druitt-St Marys Standard, over the last 2 months. From the petitioning we had done, the Hon. Member for Londonderry and the NSW Minister of Transport had organised limited bus services along Bulolo Drive, 6 each way Monday to Fridays, 2 each way Saturdays and 1 each way on Sundays. This service is also called 'Shopper Hoppers'! Community members are grateful we have this service (Westbus 674 to Windsor) but still say it is not enough! Until today there are no time tables along the bus stops of Bulolo Drive and there was 800 timetables printed originally and bus drivers do not have more to give out at present.

From the beginning, I will confirm that this cause is a passionate issue within me. I have not made it political and had no intentions to make it political - the politicians have made it political. In saying that a local Hon. State member of parliament accused me of making it 'political' by inviting the opposition to our meeting 7/11/09. I want to point out, that the opposition member of the NSW Government, Mr Ray Williams invited himself to our meeting through phone contacts left in the local press. So we didn't make it political - the government members did it themselves by not looking after affected areas from these deleted services. If they had ensured these bus services were not deleted then we would not be where we are today!

No bus operators came, no union representatives arrived yet we had local community members with banners flagging different bus route numbers. So we gathered all this information: Community members from Gasmatta wanted their service restored, it went on and on - both Local State members spoke and then Ray Williams invited himself to speak at our meeting and it became a little debate - with the community members happy with Mr. Ray Williams comments - they were also interested with The Hon. Member of Londonderry and Mount Druitt's resolution that they will take up our petitions and come back to our Community meeting of 28/11/09 at Dawson Mall, Mount Druitt, to provide feedback from the NSW Government. About 50 - 60 members of the community attended this meeting on 7/11/09. One Blacktown Councillor also spoke at our Meeting Jacqueline Donaldson and provided details of how Blacktown Council has had Transport Committees and invited members of our group to attend future meetings.

Since then, we have re-invited the same guests as before for 28/11/09. Only Mr. Ray Williams, Hon. Member Hawkesbury attended (as a guest) 80-90 members of the community attended this meeting and the outcome was for us not to give up our cause, to go to national press and take a delegation of members from our area to the Transport Minister office, presenting him with our petitions and our resolution.

I have filmed and interviewed members of the community within Whalan covering Bulolo Drive and west Popondetta Road. Last weekend members of the Community affected by the deletion of service along Gasmata, looking forward to film other members of the community as well. We have our own website, we can communicate to all group members and all community members, especially the ones that that internet facility.

Although, as an individual I am originally holding the 755 bus route flag - as a Chairperson I am waiving all the flags of the following bus routes: 739, 740,755,756,757,761,762,766,769, 774 & 782. It is hard to make everyone happy but we are working towards all routes being returned to community members bringing back better living standards. We have many members that are in our group flying their own bus route number banner and I have always given them time to speak.

This is my story as a chairperson, instigator to commence our group. I'm not running for politics. I am only fighting for this important cause as a passionate person. I will fear the day that when I am retired any Government takes away important local infrastructure which is within close reach.

We did not make it political. The government has made it political by turning a blind eye to important members of our community from children to the working to family to the elderly that struggle day to day to enjoy their life. To all of you community members we care! This all started from one voice which is now has over 15 other spokesperson voices and these other voices would have at least 5-6 people they know and so on and so on, relaying details to hundreds and thousands of members of within our community.

Are Buses Straighter?

The question that I keep getting asked about is 'Why has our bus services being cut?'

As I didn't cause this the real answer is left with our local politicians. They are the ones we have elected to represent us in NSW Parliament and represent all concerns within our communities to provide an enhanced and better life for all of us - especially when it represents essential community services. To get the real answers ask them, write letters to them and even to the NSW Transport Minister. Write to local newspapers with your concerns or other people's concerns. Let's get our message across!

The underlying answer that seems to be cropping up is between the NSW Government Ministry of Transport and Bus operators around Mount Druitt to remove buses from small streets and 'Place them onto straighter roads!' So crooked/smaller roads is harder for drivers to go through after 43 years! Now are buses realy going straight!

The NSW Minister of transport is selling the idea that Region One buses has not changed in bus numbers - yet this is when you look at this on a 'Macro' basis within the area but when you look at 'Micro' maps of bus services there are increased services around Tregear and Ropes Crossing (new suburb), so which other services do you remove to cater for this new suburb? One of our group members was at Ropes Crossing the other day and there was 3 buses to pick up 6 commuters- we understand services should be going to Ropes Crossing - we are just asking questions!

Safety Issues Affecting

Now that community members are now walking across double-laned roads, where there is more constant traffic to reach their new bus stop and where as before, they were getting them along previuosly deleted bus serviced roads, there is that 'Safety Issue' that is now predominately causing more danger.

This issue was expressed by myself at our 'S.O.B.S. Mount Druitt and Surrounding Suburbs' meeting we had and it may create more casualties as the time goes on whilst the NSW Government members take their time in preventing these issues to happen. We are not looking for whos is to blame - but we are looking for who will make that important decision to make each one of lives much safer and better.

Unanswered Questions

We, as a Group have not had any direct answers to the following unanswered questions and statement that the community has provided to us for answers from the NSW Hon. Member of Londonderry and Mount Druitt and even The Minister of Transport. We list the issues raised at the first Save Our Bus Services, Mount Druitt And Surrounding Suburbs meeting on the 7th November 2009:

1...Why was it cut?
2...Why have they not got enough time tables?
3...What about the safety of the kids?
4...It is too hard for the elderly and disabled
5...It has been a very good bus route why change it?
6...It is making it harder for school kids
7...We need a bus back at Gasmata, most people have to walk up to 800 metres tor more to get a bus which is more than the 400 metres required by NSW State Government, from the place that you live.
8...We want the 739, 740, 755 , 759, 761,762, 766, 769 , 774, 776 and 782.
9...We need buses before six for people to get to work
10..Kids are having to wait around almost an hour to get a bus home from school...if they finish
before school ends this is just a disaster waiting to happen.
11..No bus shelters and seats at the new bus stops
12..Some bus stop are in dangerous spots...on very busy roads with no crossing for the kids or
elderly
13..Buses have been taken away from important places like medical centres schools and shops..
14..New units for the elderly have been built and now there easiest bus has been taken ..
15..Bus drivers attitudes are both dismissing and uncaring ...they now have to taken the brunt of
the Public anger which in turn angers the public even more..
16..We have used the same routes for almost 43 years and with very little fuss
17..Why do buses now terminate at Plumpton and Werrington instead of going through to St.
Marys?
18 Community members around Bidwil suburbs used to be able to go direct to Plumpton Shops
- now it takes longer as it is 2 trips - one bus to Mount Druitt and one bus from Mount
Druitt to Plumpton shopping Centre.

Once we receive a response, we will advise you - the only response we have so far is that the Hon. Minister of Transport has advised that ' Constituents comments' will be included in the annual review process undertaken by Busways,Westbus and NSW Transport and Infrastructure, as of 24th November 2009.

It appears that to have our deleted services as per pre - 11/10/09 time table and retaining new services that has been introduced suburbs around the area may take a long time,yet we will not give up.

Community Members Not Informed!

Last weekend one of our community members came back from an overseas trip being away for approximately three months. She sat on one of the bus stops at Bulolo Drive, Whalan waiting to go to Mount Druitt. After waiting there for approximately one and a half hours a kind motorist stopped by and advised her that there was no buses coming through Bulolo Drive for a long time that day. You can imagine how she felt. This made her feel disorientated!
